[:es]El International Padel Experience by Madison, único circuito internacional de pádel amateur, llega a Houston del 8 al 10 de septiembre. Las pistas del The Grand Sports Club acogerán por primera vez una prueba del circuito. Hemos hablado con Carlos Moreno, uno de los máximos responsables del club, para conocer un poco más sobre esta sede.
Buenos días Carlos, háblanos de los inicios de The Grand Sports Club
El club inició su camino en 2011, si bien es cierto que la mayoría de los accionistas, pese a ser miembros históricos desde ese mismo año, nos hemos involucrado más, con nuevas responsabilidades desde marzo de 2016.
¿Qué servicios e instalaciones ofrecéis?
The Grand Sports Club es un club deportivo y social. Cuenta con 9 canchas de tenis, 5 pistas de pádel y una cancha de usos múltiples. Además disponemos de 1 pista de tenis playa, piscina, gimnasio, dojo de kárate, restaurante, dormitorios para instructores y alumnos internos, etc. Disponemos de 40.500 metros cuadrados de diversión.
Las academias juveniles de tenis, pádel y kárate están altamente concurridas y las ligas y torneos de pádel se han convertido en una constante para los miembros de todas las edades. Hemos descubierto que la parte social que el pádel trae a las instalaciones es gigante y por eso creemos que es un éxito continuar en este sentido.
¿Cuántos socios o usuarios hacen uso de las instalaciones de The Grand Sports Club?
Nuestro público es mayoritariamente societario por lo que gran parte de los usuarios de las instalaciones son miembros del club. Por nuestras instalaciones pasa una media de 450 usuarios al mes.
¿Cuál es el perfil del jugadores de pádel en Houston?
La comunidad hispana representa un importante porcentaje de los jugadores de pádel en nuestra ciudad. Son muchos los vecinos de Houston que proceden de México y su conocimiento previo de este deporte ha ayudado mucho a la expansión del pádel en la ciudad. Además, hemos tenido la suerte de “secuestrar” a excelentes jugadores de tenis que no han dudado en cambiarse al pádel tras probarlo.
Diría que hay dos generaciones muy distintas en el pádel a día de hoy en Estados Unidos. Aquella generación que aprendió a jugar en los 90 e incluso principios de los 2000 en su país de origen y una segunda generación que ha sido formada desde muy temprana edad en academias de pádel. Esta segunda generación ya se está metiendo en el ranking nacional de Pádel en EEUU y está metiéndose en puestos importantes pese a su corta edad.
Nuestro club ha sido un motor muy importante en esa nueva generación. A día de hoy 9 de los 10 primeros jugadores de pádel del ranking nacional son de Houston y 4 de los 20 primeros son juveniles de nuestra academia. Llega una nueva generación muy competitiva “Made in Houston”.
Hablas de dos generaciones diferenciadas, ¿cómo dirías que ha sido la evolución del pádel en EEUU?
Es muy interesante ver duplicarse el número de pistas y clubes de pádel en Estados Unidos. Hace años que hay pistas en Miami, Houston o Los Ángeles, pero hasta hace 3 o 4 años no se había notado con tanta intensidad este crecimiento.
Definitivamente, el éxito de los clubes ya existentes y aquellos nuevos que están por venir producirá una gran inversión en el pádel en nuestro país. Son muchos los clubes de tenis que han mostrados un gran interés en introducir pistas de pádel en sus instalaciones, en muchos casos para no perder clientes debido a la gran demanda de este servicio.
Esta presión hará que el pádel crezca de forma importante. El pádel está en este momento en un importante punto de inflexión para alcanzar el éxito en Estados Unidos.
¿Por qué decidisteis sumaros al International Padel Experience by Madison?
Nosotros apoyamos cualquier actividad que ayude a promover el pádel en Estados Unidos y estamos convencidos de que este proyecto puede ayudar a crecer este deporte en el país. Por eso, cuando se planteó la posibilidad de ser una de las sedes no dudamos ni un segundo en apostar por ello.
¿Qué características del circuito son las que más te atraen?
Tener jugadores de distintos niveles en un circuito internacional nos parece una idea brillante. Estados Unidos aún no tiene nivel para meter a sus jugadores en circuitos profesionales así que este circuito supone una gran oportunidad para que nuestros jugadores empiecen a participar en un circuito acorde a su nivel, fomentando así la práctica del deporte. Esperamos convertirnos en una sede fija de este circuito.
¿Ha generado expectación el Open?
Sin ningún tipo de duda la respuesta es SÍ. En este momento Hosuton está recuperándose de una tragedia natural como la que ha sido el Huracán Harvey. Este fenómeno hizo estragos en la ciudad a menos de dos semanas del inicio del Houston Open, por lo que imaginamos que algunos de los jugadores finalmente no podrán participar, sin embargo han mostrado un gran interés desde el principio.
¿Qué planes de futuro tenéis para el Club?
Situar a nuestros alumnos de la Academia Juvenil como pioneros del pádel a nivel nacional e internacional. Seguiremos motivando a nuestros jugadores a participar en los distintos eventos que surjan.
Con respecto al jugador que no busca competir, sino pasar un rato de ocio, seguiremos ofreciendo múltiples actividades que les permitan practicar con familia y amigos de forma divertida y agradable.
Somos el club más grande de Estados Unidos a día de hoy y no dudamos que seremos un estímulo para que se creen más clubes y canchas.
[:en]The International Padel Experience by Madison, the only amateur paddle international circuit, arrives in Houston from September 8th till 10th. The Grand Sports Club courts will host a tournament of the circuit for the first time. We spoke with Carlos Moreno, one of the responsibles of the club, to know more about this space.
Good morning Carlos, tell us about the beginning of The Grand Sports Club
The club started its journey in 2011, although it is true that the majority of shareholders, despite being a member since that year, have become more involved, with new responsibilities since March 2016.
What services and facilities do you offer to the members?
The Grand Sports Club is a sports and social club. It has 9 tennis courts, 5 paddle courts and a multipurpose court. In addition we have 1 beach-tennis court, swimming pool, gym, karate dojo, restaurant, rooms for instructors and internal students, etc. We offer 40,500 square meters of fun!
The academies of tennis, paddle and karate for young people are highly frequented and paddle courts and tournaments have become a constant for members of all ages. We have discovered that the social part that the paddle brings to the facilities is giant and for that reason we believe that it is a success to continue on this way.
How many people make use of The Grand Sports Club facilities?
A large part of the users of the facilities are members of the club. An average of 450 users per month passes through our facilities.
What is the profile of the paddle players in Houston?
The Hispanic community represents an important percentage of the paddle players in our city. Many Houston residents come from Mexico and their prior knowledge of the sport has greatly helped for the paddle expansion in the city. In addition, we have been lucky to «kidnap» excellent tennis players who have not hesitated to switch to the paddle after trying it.
I would say that there are two very different generations on the paddle today in the United States. A first generation that learned to play in the 90’s and even the beginning of the 2000’s in their country of origin and a second generation that has been formed from a very early age in paddle academies here in USA. This second generation is already getting into the national ranking of Padel in the US and is getting into important positions despite their young age.
Our club has been a very important engine in this new generation. To date, 9 of the top 10 paddle players in the national ranking are from Houston and 4 of the top 20 are juniors from our academy. A very competitive new generation «Made in Houston» arrives.
You talk about two generations differentiated, how would you say that has been the evolution of the paddle in the US?
It is very interesting to see double the number of courts and paddle clubs in the United States. For years there have been courts in Miami, Houston or Los Angeles, but until 3 or 4 years ago this growth had not been noticed so intensely.
Definitely, the success of existing clubs and new ones that are to come will produce a great investment in the paddle in our country. There are many tennis clubs that have shown great interest in introducing paddle tennis courts in their facilities, in many cases not to lose customers due to the high demand for this service.
This pressure will cause the paddle to grow significantly. Padel is at this moment an important turning point for success in the United States.
Why did you decide to join the International Padel Experience by Madison?
We support any activity that helps promote the paddle in the United States and we are convinced that this project can help to grow this sport in the country. Therefore, when it was considered the possibility of being one of the headquarters we did not hesitate even a second to bet on it.
What are the characteristics of the circuit that attract you the most?
Having players of different levels in an international circuit seems to us a brilliant idea. The United States does not have yet the level to put its players in professional circuits so this circuit is a great opportunity for our players to start participating in a circuit according to their level, thus encouraging the practice of the sport. We hope to become a fixed seat of this circuit.
Has the Open generated an expectation?
Without any doubt the answer is YES. At this point Hosuton is recovering from a natural tragedy like Hurricane Harvey. This phenomenon wreaked havoc in the city less than two weeks before the start of the Houston Open, so we imagine that some of the players will finally not be able to participate, but they have shown great interest from the beginning.
What future plans do you have for the Club?
To place our students of the Youth Academy as pioneers of the paddle at national and international level. We will continue to motivate our players to participate in the various events that arise. With respect to the player who does not seek to compete, but to spend some leisure time, we will continue to offer multiple activities that allow them to practice with family and friends in a fun and enjoyable way. We are the largest club in the United States today and we do not doubt that we will be a stimulus to create more clubs and courts.[:]
